Headache Cures

Headaches are common to people all over the world and the headache remedies are many and diverse depending on the type and severity of the headache. Very severe headaches are also referred to as migraines and can cause great discomfort to a person. Some cases of migraines have been known to be a cause of medical emergencies.

Symptoms and causes of Headaches

Before recommending any headache remedies it is important to know the symptoms of headaches and migraines. The most common symptoms of headaches and migraines include:

1. Headaches are usually pains in the head and the upper part of the neck

2. Migraines are usually accompanied by feeling of nausea, blind spots and general irritation. Fatigue and muscle tensions are also common

3. Headaches vary in type and the intensity of pain. Migraines are the most painful and some headaches could be mild.

The Causes of headaches include

1. Problems in the head and neck region- Any problems in the said region would trigger a signal response to the brain which would be interpreted as pain e.g. tooth decay, eye problems, sinusitis, common cold, flu, ear infections etc.

2. Dehydration and starvation – Severe dehydration can lead to headaches and loss of alertness, starvation has been also identified as a common source of headaches.

3. Fatigue- Fatigue and stress are also known causes of headaches and migraines.

4. Accumulation of fluid in the brain- This has been classified as one of the severe cases in the human body that can cause headaches. The brain does not have pain receptors but the parts surrounding it such as the cranium (skull) contains receptors which can send signals to the brain interpreted as pain.

5. Lack of sleep- Poor sleeping habits or change in sleeping habits can cause headaches

The remedies :

There are probably tens if not hundreds of headache remedies that have been used at different times all over the world. These remedies vary from the simple home remedies to the complex interventions that may require specialized treatment. The most common types of remedies for headaches include:

Drinking water- This is recommended if the headache is caused by dehydration

Take coffee- Caffeine in coffee has been known to contract blood vessels and ease pain. Car should be taken because excess usage of coffee has been known to also trigger headaches and make some headaches worse.

Band tying- Tying a band around ones head has been known to calm headaches mainly by contracting the blood vessels of the head.

Peppermint oil- The aroma from this has been known to ease the pain of headaches. It is also rubbed on the head itself to get a soothing effect. The actual way this eases pain is not known

Pain killers- There is a wide range of painkillers that are known to result in relief the pain of headaches. Some of the commonly used painkillers as headache remedies include, paracetamol, aspirin, iboprofen, and diclofenac among others.

It is advised that in case the headaches are very frequent or if the headache remedies don’t work, then one should seek assistance from a medical practitioner.
